Certain skills are considered essential to the provision of first aid and are taught ubiquitously. Particularly, the “ABC”s of first aid, which focuses on critical life-saving intervention, must be rendered before treatment of less serious injuries. ABC stands for Airway, Breathing, and Circulation. The same mnemonic is used by all emergency health professionals. Attention must first be brought to the airway to ensure it is clear. Obstruction (choking) is a life-threatening emergency.

The first and most basic question one might ask is, “What is reflexology?” It is an alternative health therapy which focuses on affecting the natural reflex areas we all have in our hands and feet. Essentially, the hands and feet are a diagram of the body. By mapping this out on a comprehensive chart, we find that each major organ and gland of the body has a specific reflex area in the foot and hand. These reflex areas become congested with crystalline deposits, thus restricting blood flow. By using various techniques, reflexologists can break up congestion in these areas, thereby improving blood flow. Better blood circulation means greater vitality.

Reflexology is also used by many to relieve stress and tension. Often, the cause of a headache can be traced to an inordinate amount of stress a person has been trying to deal with. By seeing a qualified reflexologist, many have reported long-term relief from such ailments. This is just one of the benefits of reflexology.

Reflexology, as a therapeutic practice, is more than a nice foot massage. Without the use of tools or devices, a reflexology session is a natural, non-invasive therapy proven to improve one’s health and well-being. Reflexology is often seen as the perfect adjunct to an individual’s already existing routine of health care, as it never interferes with existing treatment of any kind. Whether one prefers to pursue a medical regimen for their chronic ailments or one more in line with a holistic, naturopathic approach, an alternative therapy like reflexology is the perfect complement.

At one time or another, Portland residents will be faced with the decision to repair or replace their home or commercial roofing structure. While in some cases, the decision to install a new roof may be crystal clear, other situations may lend themselves to carefully weigh the pros and cons.

A professional roofing contractor in Portland can help you make the right choice between roof repair and a new roof installation for your Oregon home or business. The following list of considerations will assist you with your roofing decisions.

Residential and Commercial Roofing — How Old Is Your Portland Roof?

A chief thing to consider when deciding on roof repair in Portland or an entirely new roof is the age of your existing roof. A new roof generally lasts between 10 and 20 years. However, depending on maintenance, the materials used and the quality of installation, you can get as many as 50 years out of your roof.

Your Portland roofing contractor can conduct an inspection of your roof and make a prognosis as to how much longer it will last. If your roof is in its latter years, it may be better to install a new roof for your Oregon home or commercial roofing structure.

Residential and Commercial Roofing — What Is the Extent of Damage to Your Portland Roof?

It’s possible that roof repair for your Portland home or commercial building should be enough to help you get a few more years out of your roofing structure. For example, sometimes a roof leak can be eliminated with minimal repairs. In other cases, a leak can be an indication of a much larger problem, which can create the need for ongoing repairs that only seem to put off the inevitable.

Roof Repair Vs. New Roof Installation in Portland, Oregon — How Much Is This Going to Cost?

Of course, cost will be a factor in your decision between a new roof and roof repair for your home or business. If the cost for repairs to your residential or commercial roofing structure in Portland are low and you aren’t simply masking a more complex issue, then the choice is simple.

However, if your roofing contractor in Portland paints a picture of constant repair needs and the ultimate necessity for installing a new roof for your Oregon home or business, replacement may be the most cost effective and hassle free answer.

Amazing Pacific Northwest Us Road Trips

There isn’t much of a better way to see the United States than by taking a great American road trip, and the pacific northwest has some of the best drives (of varying lengths) to choose from. The ones listed below are some of the best, in different areas and of different lengths to help fit any mood.

Highway 20, also known as North Cascades Highway, through Washington state is one of the most beautiful drives you’ll ever take. This highway goes across the state from east to west and is closed during the winters. Driving through the mountains you’ll be pleased to see many mountain views and surprised by all the waterfalls as you take the windy turns.

Taking highway 101 around the Olympic Peninsula is a wonderful way to spend the day. You’ll be driving through rainforests, and then reach the beach. Of course you can stop at any point you feel like it, or you can follow this road south all the way down along the Oregon and California coasts as well.

The historic Columbia River highway is often called the king of roads and one of America’s most glorious drives. This is a narrow seventy mile drive that starts in Portland, Oregon and ends in The Dalles (you can do it the other way too, obviously). Driving along Interstate 84 you will drive past many waterfalls, including Multnomah Falls, the third tallest fall in the USA.

The west cascades scenic byway is a 215 mile drive down the spine of Oregon, typically taking somewhere between seven and nine hours to complete, but the trip itself may take you longer than that because you may want to stop at some of the many trails along the way. This scenic drive takes you by rivers and beautiful views along the west side of the cascades. You can only really do this drive from the late spring through the fall because 19 and 46 are closed during the wi

Benefits Of Stainless Steel Baby Bottles

There are many benefits to using stainless steel baby bottles rather than the alternative plastic, BPA containing baby bottles and glass baby bottles. The main reason being the reduced exposure to BPA, but stainless steel baby bottles are also very durable, easy to clean, heat up quickly and typically contain up to 60% recycled materials (and are 100% recyclable).

For over 40 years, Bisphenol A (BPA) has been used as a building block of several plastics including drinking bottles, cups and protective lining in cans and containers in which foods and beverages are packaged. Although concerns about the hazards of the exposure of BPA to humans have been suspected since the 1930′s, it’s only recently that the concerns have gained enough attention to prompt retailers and manufacturers to eliminate BPA products. Some of the concerns of BPA include developmental issues in children, early onset of puberty and birth defects.

A new study by the National Toxicology Program at the National Institutes of Health and FDA have concluded that there is validity to these concerns of human exposure to BPA. More tests are on the way, but in the meantime, the FDA has recommended that reasonable steps be taken to reduce the amount of BPA we are exposed to.

Steps that the FDA plans to take is to facilitate the development of alternative linings of infant formula cans as well as other food can linings which do not contain BPA and supporting the shift to more regulations surrounding the use of BPA in our food handling products.

Another step by the FDA is the support of the industry’s actions to stop producing baby bottles and infant feeding cups that contain BPA, although this may take some time. Alternatives currently ava
1000
ilable for feeding babies include glass bottles and stainless steel baby bottles, although the potential for glass breaking is great with an infant handling it, so that latter may be a more effective alternative.

Made from the purest elements on the earth (Chromium, Nitrogen, Nickel, etc.), Stainless steel baby bottles are naturally resistant to bacterial growth, and are dishwasher safe to promote easy, fast cleaning and sterilize easily. This form of stainless steel is used for surgical devices, dental implants, food containers, etc. It is 100% BPA free and plastic free.

Stainless steel baby bottles also heat contents quickly simply by placing them in a container of warm water, or running them under the warm water tap. The easy-to-hold bottles also fit most warming devices, giving parents ultimate freedom in temperature control. Of course, the microwave is not a safe way to heat contents in a stainless steel bottle, but there is controversy surrounding the amount of nutrients microwave radiation destroys in formula as well as hot spots created in liquids when using a microwave that can burn infants, so that option is not recommended regardless.

Stainless steel is 100% recyclable. An average stainless steel object is composed of about 60% recycled material of which approximately 40% originates from end-of-life products and approximately 60% comes from manufacturing processes.

Specifically, you may find Eco-Baba brand Stainless steel baby bottles to be the best baby bottle for you little one. As well as all of the benefits explained above, Eco-Baba stainless steel bottles are compatible with most wide-neck brand nipples and sippies from major manufacturers including Avent, Dr. Browns, Green to Grow, and many others. Additionally, Eco Baba also offers 2 different sippy spouts specifically designed to help transition your baby from bottle to sippy. Eco-Baba stainless steel baby bottles do not use any liners on the inside, nor toxic paints or lacquers on the outside and come with a safe silicon medium flow nipple.

Article Directory: http://www.articledashboard.com

Based in Portland, Oregon Eco Baba co-founders, Peter and Tracie Zenti say they are just like any parents who simply want the best for our children. Eco Baba bottles and accessories are available to parents nationwide for purchase online or through specialty retailers.

20 Free Ebay Powerseller Secrets

Do you sell on ebay? If so, this may your opportunity to take your business to the next level: to increase sales and operate more efficiently. This advice comes direct from Ebay PowerSellers, the best in the business. Avoid their mistakes and adopt these twenty tips into your Ebay business; you’ll be glad you did.
1. Raise your shipping fee.
Make sure you don’t just charge for the shipping postage, but for your ‘handling’ fees as well. This may include packaging materials such as labels, envelopes, and bubble wrap, as well as your time to prepare and drop the package off at the post office. Make sure your minimum shipping & handling is $1 beyond your actual shipping, and hopefully a few bucks more than that.
2. Use stealth postage.
Print your shipping labels without showing any shipping costs. Labels printed from PayPal and other services will do this for you. If a customer ever complains about your profits from shipping, simply respond and explain your S&H fee includes both shipping AND handling. The handling includes the cost of packaging materials and time. If all your Ebay listings have this basic shipping & handling disclaimer, then you should never get a complaint.
3. Don’t waste money on ad embellishments.
Don’t pay extra for featured, bold, or any other flair. Gallery is the only option that may be useful in some cases, depending on what items you sell. Most people find your listings by keyword searches. Embellishments generally do not seem to increase traffic. Remember that the ‘add ons’ are where most companies make their profit. You want to use this strategy when selling to your customers, but not when buying listings from Ebay.
4. Lower your PayPal rate.
If you receive more than $3,000 per month in PayPal funds you can qualify for a lower merchant % rate. Rates are subject to change, but it may take you from 3.1% to 2.7%. https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_fees-rate-about
5. Set your minimum selling price.
Anything you list on Ebay has a certain overhead and below a certain price, selling is no longer worth it to you. This should take everything into consideration- your t
1000
ime, utility costs, office equipment, software, ISP fees, workspace rent, and more. Some sellers set a general, all-items minimum selling price at $5, $10, or $20. Figure out your minimum price and stick to it. It is also important to calculate your monthly sales break even point. You want to make sure your business is worthwhile and meets your basic minimum goals, especially if put a lot of energy into it.
6. Use bundles.
Using low priced items bundled together is an effective strategy to pass savings on to a customer, yet maintain your minimum selling price. This bundling strategy occurs frequently in retail stores – like 8 pairs of socks – and in grocery stores – 10 hotdogs – and big box stores, like Costco: 2 packs of cereal. Selling these items individually would not be worth it. However, bundling allows you to sell for a higher price while giving a customer a feeling of savings through the bulk purchase- even though they are probably buying more than the customer really needs.
7. Save money on packaging supplies.
If you’re creative, you can find cheap or free sources of packaging materials. For instance, packing peanuts can be found for free if you ask around industrial places or furniture stores. If you are a UPS member, you can get free shipping tape. You can often get unmarked boxes for free if you ask around stores in malls or office supply stores. Some Ebay sellers use the free USPS priority mail boxes and turn them inside out in order to ship via another service. Not only does this look unprofessional and take extra time, but it’s illegal, according to USPS. Look around and you will find either free or affordable solutions.
8. Take good digital photos of your items.
You don’t have to have an expensive camera to take good digital photos, but just a basic knowledge of photography. Do a Google search and you will find a quick list. This usually includes using a tripod, making sure the lighting is good (bright and diffused – no harsh shadows, such as natural light), and making sure the background is white or solid- with no distracting objects in the frame. If you photograph small items, you may consider buying a cheap light box or light tent for $100 or less. You can find these on Ebay, of course.
9. Lure people to your Ebay store.
Listing fees in your store is a fraction of the cost as a regular listing. So, if you place links or banners in your regular listings that encourage viewing your store items then that could help increase store sales.
10. Use automated feedback.
Sellers used to spend hours keeping track of feedback. If you use Selling Manager Pro, you can use automated feedback in bulk. After a quick setup, you may never have to spend time leaving feedback again. It can either be set so you automatically leave positive feedback after each auction or only when you receive positive feedback. If you ever get neutral or negative feedback, you have an option to deal with it manually.
11. Automate email messages to customers.
When a customer makes an order you can have emails automatically sent from you to them. Services like Ebay’s Selling Manager Pro do this. The email can either be an invoice for them to pay, or, if already paid, it can just acknowledge their order and offer additional products, encouraging repeat business. Automating these emails is a great time saver and an effective marketing tool.
12. Promote repeat business.
Repeat business is the best. It’s far more efficient to sell more products to the same customers than to seek out new ones. Even if you have to alter your business practice to create ‘add-on’ products specifically to sell to your existing customers, then do so! No one is more likely to buy from you than your existing happy customer.
13. Offer bulk purchase incentives.
People like getting discounts. In reality, they may be paying an arm and a leg but if they ‘feel’ like they’re saving, then they’re happy. And if your customer is happy, then you’re happy. By offering price breaks
1000
on lots of items in the same order, it may encourage people to buy more to ‘save more’ and increase your sales. You can also offer free shipping or give a free gift after a customer buys a certain number of items.
14. Never miss a marketing opportunity.
Every point of contact you have with a customer should promote your products. If you send an email, for example, always include your URL to view more products. When you ship a package, enclose a flier that shows more products and encourages visiting your store or website. To make it effective you have to give them a reason to buy. Try enclosing a coupon for 25% off their next purchase – expiring in 5 days, for example, to convey a feeling of urgency. People don’t like missing opportunities, so if you propose a sale on additional items, always have a deadline. Try also stamping your URL on the outside of the packages or typing on the shipping label as part of your address. You never know- someone who handles the package may be curious to visit your site. Or, the package may sit in an office and someone may walk by it and later choose to visit your URL. There is no restriction for mailing a little ‘advertisement’ and a lot of hands carry and view that package.
15. Use flat rate priority shipping from USPS.
Flat rate priority shipping is a pretty good deal for either domestic or flat rate global priority (for international orders). The flat rate envelopes (cheap) should not be confused with the regular priority envelopes (expensive).
16. Choose a store name that uses keywords.

Your Ebay store pages will get indexed by search engines and if keyword optimized, you should get more search traffic to your store.
So, when you choose your Ebay username and Ebay Store name, use a keyword or two as a part of your name. Then, use the same keyword within an H1 tag, in bold, in italic, and in your text description. Using the basic SEO principles for your Ebay store pages and about me page will help it get more traffic from search engines.
17. Schedule your listings to end at a peak time.
The timing of your listing is important, because in the final few hours before its end, it becomes increasingly more visible and prominent to visitors. This narrow window of time is when your item is most likely to sell. It may take some research and experimentation to find the peak time for your auction to end. Tools like Turbo Lister allow you to easily control when each auction starts and ends. Even though it costs a few cents extra to schedule (postponing an auction’s start), having a listing end at a peak time is definitely worth it. To help find an ideal time, we can first eliminate when you don’t want your listing to end. Assuming the majority of your buyers will be in the U.S., we can first assume you don’t want your auction to end anytime between 11am or 8am, since the majority of people will be asleep. Further, you might ask yourself if your type of item would be used for work or personal use only. If for personal, it might be worth considering that during a lunch break or near the end of a workday (5pm), or mid-evening may be an appropriate time to list such an item. For professional work-related items, perhaps it less likely that someone may search for these items in the evenings, but more during working hours. If you have a store, you may also view statistics to see what day of the week and what time of day most people visit your store. Experience as a Powerseller has shown that Sunday afternoon through Thursday are the best days. And 11am to 8pm PST tends to be the most effective time ranges. Avoid holiday mornings and afternoons, as many people sleep in and usually go shopping and are aw
1000
ay from computers in the afternoon.
18. Fill your listing title with keywords.
Use all the space allowed with meaningful keywords and avoid the use of empty words like ‘awesome’, having ALL CAPS, or using too many exclamation marks!!! Try adding misspellings in your title. It might increase traffic in some cases.
19. Use photos directly from the manufacturer.
It saves time to copy and use a photo from the manufacturer’s website and it looks professional. In most cases the manufacturer encourages use of their official photos as it helps their products get represented accurately and professionally. However, always be conscious of copyright laws and read any image use agreements posted. Taking images from other Ebay sellers is not recommended.
20. Put your website URL in your About Me page.
Ebay rules allow you to link to a website from your About Me page as a way to provide more product or company information to the prospective buyer. Make the URL bold and prominent and you should see a slight increase in traffic to your website. The more you sell directly from your own website, the better. Even if all you have for ecommerce is the free PayPal checkout buttons, it is still preferred to selling through Ebay. You can save money by selling directly (fewer fees) and benefit by establishing a more direct relationship with the customer.

Tigard, Oregon is located approximately 10 miles southwest of downtown Portland.

The neighborhoods in Tigard cater to families and Tigard houses are often single family homes. Approximately 75 percent homes are owned in the city. Tigard is quickly becoming a desired home for many families due to the highly regarded school system, which attracts families from all over the country.

Tigard is growing at a fast rate and so are the housing options available. There are various older neighborhoods that are in beautiful condition and offer residents both comfort and affordability. In addition to these well established, historic neighborhoods, Tigard also offers new neighborhoods with new homes that continue to provide Tigard residents with an excellent atmosphere to raise a family.

One of the fastest growing areas in Tigard is Bull Mountain, which is known for its breathtaking views of the Willamette Valley and the Cascade Range. The neighborhood of Bull Mountain has truly transitioned from rural to residential recently as the area that was once known for it’s large lot sizes and large homes has been replaced with new homes on smaller lots. Despite the downsize in home and lot size, Bull Mountain remains a highly sought after place to live in Tigard due to it’s close proximity to the city and it’s quaint, friendly neighborhoods.

Another area of Tigard that many residents choose to live is King City. Located directly south of Bull Mountain, this area was originally built as a planned adult community. It is now primarily residential with a wide variety of new construction projects that offer affordable, single family homes near King City’s signature 17 acre public park.

Lake Oswego is also one of Tigard’s premier residential neighborhoods. Incorporated in 1910, this area offers some of the finest houses in Tigard that are nestled among beautiful scenery that overlooks the 405-acre Oswego Lake. Living near the lake provides residents with easy access to boating, swimming and water sports during the summer month for the city of just over 35,000 people. There are also many housing options in Lake Oswego including the original “LO” neighborhoods that offer a taste of England. These homes are reminiscent of English cottages and Tudor-style homes.

These are just a couple of the excellent choices for neighborhoods in Tigard. Not only does Tigard offer a variety of neighborhoods to choose from but it also offers a variety of homes. From old neighborhoods and old homes to new neighborhoods and new homes, Tigard has it all. And the cities convenient location to all urban amenities in a rural atmosphere makes it the perfect place to relocate and raise a family.

How can you be sure you’ve got the right mortgage broker as you shop around?

First: make sure you are working with an experienced, professional loan officer. The largest financial transaction of your life is far too important to place into the hands of someone who is not capable of advising you properly and troubleshooting the issues that may arise along the way. But how can you tell?

Here are 4 simple questions your lender ABSOLUTELY must be able to answer correctly. If they don’t have the answers…RUN…DON’T WALK… RUN…TO A LENDER THAT DOES!

1. What are mortgage interest rates based on?

(The only correct answer is Mortgage Backed Securities or Mortgage Bonds, NOT the 10-year Treasury Note. While the 10-year Treasury Note sometimes trends in the same direction as Mortgage Bonds, it is not unusual to see them move in completely opposite directions. DO NOT work with a lender who has their eyes on the wrong indicators.)

2. What is the next Economic Report or event that could cause interest rate movement?

(A professional lender will have this at their fingertips. For an up-to-date calendar of weekly economic reports and events that may cause rates to fluctuate, visit www.pdxloan.com/economicreport/ and join the weekly distribution list for MMG Weekly – this is a copy of a weekly newsletter on current Economic Reports.)

3. When Bernanke and the Fed “change rates”, what does this mean… and what impact does this have on mortgage interest rates?

(The answer may surprise you. When the Fed makes a move, they can change a rate called the “Fed Funds Rate” or “Discount Rate”. These are both very shortterm rates that impact credit cards, Home Equity credit lines, auto loans and the like. On the day of the Fed move, Mortgage rates most often will actually move in the opposite direction as the Fed change. This is due to the dynamics within the fi nancial markets in response to infl ation. For more information and explanation visit Google or research online further).

4. Do you have access to live, real time, mortgage bond quotes?

(If a lender cannot explain how Mortgage Bonds and interest rates are moving in real time and warn you in advance of a costly intra-dayprice change, you are talking with someone who is still reading yesterday’s newspaper, and probably not a professional with whom to entrust your home mortgage financing. Would you work with a stockbroker who is only able to grab yesterday’s paper to tell you how a stock traded yesterday, but had no idea what the movement looks like at the present time and what market conditions could cause changes in the near future? No way!)

Be smart… Ask questions… Get answers!

More than likely, this is one of the largest and most important financial transactions you will ever make. You might do this only four or five times in your entire life… but a reputable experienced mortgage broker does this every single day. It’s your home and your future. Choose someone who makes it their profession and passion, ready to work for your best interest.

Once you are satisfied that you are working with a top-quality professional mortgage advisor, you’ll want to continue with the 5 rules and secrets you must know to “shop” for a home mortgage loan effectively.
On the web at DrAGibson.com

We spend most of our time trying to control anger in children by giving them what they are giving us: Anger for anger. Does it work? Not often. And, not for long either. If your intention is to teach a child that anger is bad, you will never teach him or her with anger. Can’t be done.

The only thing you may teach is that you, his parent, shouldn’t be the target of a his anger. That’s different. He still understands that anger is basically okay. Getting the child to respect you and direct his anger elsewhere depends on how angry the child is. You may teach the occasionally angry child that he is best advised to direct angry any place but at you. It means he shouldn’t threaten authority and that you have some. But this can be a problem. His options are to direct his anger either side ways ( those his age) or downward ( those younger). Is this what you really want?

If you have a child who is angry all the time and as a result makes you angry all the time, then he is likely to spread his feelings all over the landscape: upwards, downwards and sideways. Now you’ve got problems because he doesn’t care who gets his anger. It is this child who needs a different parental anger strategy. The best one? No anger display from you. Period.

If someone comes at you snorting steam, will you take it with indifference? Probably not. If that person’s anger with you is intended to get you to change, it is a wasted gesture: all it does it make you angry. So now we have two angry people. Great. Where is all this going to end? It is no different with a kid. For the most part, adult anger, when directed to an annoying child, is an adult tantrum, no matter how justified the adult thinks it is. Adult tantrums do not produce the change adults want: respect. Respect is vital in child control. Self-control is how you get it.

Ever observe a dysfunctional family? Did you notice all the anger? Did you notice, too, that kids take anger out on other kids in the family? Older kids beat up younger kids cause they are easy prey. Younger sibs are weak and vulnerable. This is nothing more than the lion looking for the slowest wildebeest. Some parents assume that older kids will always be lions; that somehow it is all a part of a normal childhood to fight with younger siblings. Those parents are wrong. There is nothing natural about sibling fighting. It is learned.. Things that are learned can be unlearned. There shouldn’t be any of the oldest beating up the youngest in your house. It can all go away. You, the parent, are the key. But you can’t turn the key with anger.

The cure to an angry family lies first in a parent examining the dynamics of anger in their house. Question Number (1): is the anger displayed in your house normal or abnormal? This is hard to answer but if what you see is normal ( no matter of awful it may seem to an outsider) then you aren’t likely to budge. You may need to compare your self with other families. Go find several and observe: How do the Dads talk to the Moms and vice versa? How to either of them talk with their kids? How does your family stack up against what you’ve seen. Does the comparison make you wince?

Question Number (two) What is the purpose of your anger? Is it to give your self a soap box and show how badly you’ve been treated or is to create change in someone. You can’t have both.

Since all anger has to go somewhere, the alternative is to have none. That’s right. You have a choice in the matter. Skip the anger entirely.

Many assume anger is this biological thing that simply happens. That’s wrong. If someone gets upset with you, what do you do about it? Just accept it? Probably not. You bat it right back unless the person who gave it to you is bigger, stronger and/ or meaner than you are. All of these are decisions. You make a split second judgment about how and where you are to be angry based on the person in front of you. . In that case it is unlikely that the anger you got delivered to you just goes up in a puff of smoke, although it could. You do something within.

If you have a depression problem, you keep anger to yourself and you corrode from the inside out. If you don’t’ have a depression problem, you find someone to give anger to. Anger is the gift that keeps on giving. Could be your spouse. The clerk in the grocery store. The jerk cutting you off on the highway. Your victim could be someone completely unrelated to the situation.

Alternatively, you can make a decision that you don’t need to react. So you don’t. You channel your feelings with something else more productive, say, working in the garden or making a loaf of bread. You simply make up your mind that there’s nothing the kid (or anyone else, for that matter) can do to you to get you upset. Channeling your feelings into the weeds around a tomato plant is a lot easier than trying to channel your angry kids feelings. You always can control you. You rarely can control someone else.

What are you likely to learn by this exercise: that not only does your anger go away, so does your kids. Turns out he needs you more than either you or he thought. Turns out if you set the model he will follow. This isn’t something you talk about; this is something you do. You can talk later when everything settles down. You just think that because he gets upset at you all the time, says bad things, hits, swears and all the rest that he will always be upset and will always take his upset out on you and or the younger kids in the family. It isn’t true.

But the only way you will find this out if this is true, is to do it. Do you have the courage to drop anger for eight (8) weeks to find out? Eight weeks of the No Anger Display Diet will show you enough change in your child to convince yourself that this diet should be a way of life. The sooner you get started the better.

When wanting to get rid of old vehicles, car donation is a solid choice. It could encourage tax write-offs if you decide to donate your cars to charities recognized by the IRS. This alone has made donating cars an intriguing option. Portland, Oregon has plenty of charities in which to choose from ready and willing to accept that profitable new old car.

Here are the following charities in Portland recognized by the IRS that will allow you to take advantage of tax deductions:

United Way of the Mid Willamette Valley – a socio civic organization that helps the hungry, jobless, elderly, children, and many other groups. It is one of Oregon’s most well-known institutions.

Urban Homesteading Assistance Board – helps those with financial problems find a home they could own. Many of its funds are used for housing programs and 0% interest loans for families in need.

There are also Boys and Girls Club chapters in Portland your donated car can help. Many of these charities can either have members use them or sell them off and make use of the money made from the sale. Along the same token, tax deductions are plentiful when it comes to donating cars through Portland charities. If the charity decides to auction your donated car, you will receive a tax deduction equal to its selling price. The fair market value of the car is given to you if they decide to use it instead as well. It’s a win win situation overall.

Tax situation is different for everyone, it would be advisable to ask your tax expert in Portland on how a car donation would be benefial to you. It’s surprising to see how different just one car donation can make. Do you know that you will get the maximum tax credit when you donate your old used car or any vehicle or automobile to car donation centres in Portland? Most of these organizations combined their knowledge of the auto industry with a desire to advance philanthropic causes through car donations, auto donations and other charitable contributions. Non-profit organizations are in constant need of additional funds and you can help with your car donations.

In any case, you would still get the benefit of tax deductions. If a charity programs decided to auction the vehicle that you have donated, you would be entitled to a tax writeoff where it is usually the equivalent to the selling price of the same. If the charity chose to use the car for a specific charity reason, you will usually get a tax write off equivalent to the fair market value of the car.

“scrap 100 Percent Of The Cougar Ace Vehicles” – Mazda

Mazda Motor Corporation announced that all of the U.S.- and Canada-bound Mazda vehicles from Cougar Ace, a car-carrying which nearly capsized off the Aleutian Islands in late July, would be scrapped.

“After thorough testing by engineers from our North American and Japanese R&D centers, we decided the most appropriate course of action – with our customers foremost in mind – was not to sell any of the 4,703 Mazdas aboard the ship,” said Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO of Mazda North American Operations, based in Irvine, California.

Cougar Ace was carrying 4,703 Mazdas, half of which is Mazda 3 and about one-fourth is Mazda CX-7. Mazda 3 and CX-7 are two most precious vehicles of the automaker. Mazda 3 auto parts as well as those of CX-7 are exactly engineered to satisfy quality and safety features of the vehicles.

Cougar Ace vessel sat listing at more than 60-degrees for nearly a month after an incident at sea, before it could be towed to the Port of Portland, Oregon for repairs and to have its cargo off-loaded. O’Sullivan added that even though some of the Mazdas aboard the vessel showed little or no visible damage there is still the potential for future problems. This is the very reason why the automaker decided not to sell any of the vehicles on board Cougar Ace. He continued, “We always put the customer first. This drove our decision to scrap every one of the Mazdas involved in this incident.”

Said decision to all vehicles on board the Cougar Ace and to disclose their vehicle identification numbers (VINs) was applauded by the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA). The VINs are displayed at Mazda customer website. “Even though little visible damage
1000
existed on some of the vehicles, Mazda put the customer first and made the right decision to scrap 100 percent of the vehicles because of potential safety concerns.” said David Regan, VP of Legislative Affairs with NADA. “This is clear example of good corporate citizenship.”

Regan added, “Mazda has been an ardent supporter of ensuring that insurance companies disclose the VINs so that consumers and dealers have the information they need to make an educated decision on the value and safety of vehicles. By publicly disclosing the VINs of the questionable vehicles and then choosing to scrap them all together, they show how committed they are to the health and well-being of their customers.”

While proper materials and quality installation are crucial aspects to a durable roof, your Lake Oswego roofing installation can last much longer with regular maintenance. Learn the importance of upkeep for your Lake Oswego roof. Find out how often you should schedule regular maintenance and what you should expect from OR roof repair.

Lake Oswego Maintenance Roofing to Protect Against Weather Deterioration

Lake Oswego is located just south of the highly precipitous city of Portland, Oregon, and as a result, experiences similar climate conditions, along with periods of rain and snow. Additionally, while rainfall contributes to the beautiful green landscape in Lake Oswego, the damp climate is the perfect environment for algae, moss, mold and mildew.

If left unchecked, overabundant moisture and the growth of moss and fungus can cause your Lake Oswego roofing structure to rot. Scheduling regular maintenance with a roofing contractor in Oregon can help keep your Lake Oswego roof in tact and prevent extensive weather damage.

Routine OR Roof Repair and Maintenance Saves Money in the Long Run

Hire a qualified roofing contractor in Oregon to perform routine inspection and maintenance in order to maintain the energy efficiency of your Lake Oswego roofing installation. The condition of your Lake Oswego roof directly corresponds to energy costs for heating and cooling your home. Routine OR roof repair will prevent damage to your home insulation and ensure proper ventilation, allowing air to circulate more efficiently.

Regular maintenance also keeps your Lake Oswego roof in tip-top shape. With routine inspections, your roofing contractor in Oregon can detect any leaks and other signs of decay and damage at the onset. Immediate repairs and restoration to the condition of your roof can prevent costlier repairs down the road.

Schedule Routine Maintenance With a Qualified Lake Oswego Roofing Specialist

When it comes to quality OR roof repair, expertise counts. Hire a professional roofing contractor in Oregon with several years of experience in Lake Oswego roofing. Check references thoroughly and verify that sure your prospective contractor is licensed, bonded and insured in the State of Oregon.

In order to ensure the longevity of your Lake Oswego roof, schedule routine inspection, maintenance and OR roof repair about once each year. With regular upkeep, you can enjoy the benefits of an efficient, long lasting roof.

Not Called Stumptown

We all know Portland is no stranger to delicious coffee. As pioneers of many great local products, it only seems fitting that some of the world’s best roasted coffee is made right here in this fantastic city of ours. As a purveyor and distributor of these fine coffee products let me introduce to you the best coffee you can find, not called Stumptown, in Portland, OR.

Nossa Familia Coffee

Clearly one of the best coffees roasted in Portland. Nossa Familia gets all of their green coffee beans from their family farm in Brazil. They’ve been growing coffee in the rich fertile lands of Brazil for over 100 years and the taste can’t be matched. With superb roasting skills to bring out the best of the coffee bean flavor, you simply can’t help but love their coffee.

Where to find them?

2 N. Killingsworth, Portland, 97217 (Ethos Builiding)

What makes them great?

Single origin coffees can be hit or miss, but when they hit they’re out of this world. Nossa Familia has perfected the art of consistency and quality. You haven’t lived till you’ve had an Ernesto’s latte or a Teodoro’s French press.

Cellar Door

This is one of our favorite little roasters. Jeremy and Andrea have been working hard to produce one of the finest coffees you’ve ever tasted. That would be good enough for most companies, but not for them. They strive for perfection from roasting, packaging, and brewing. Using 100% renewable energy to power their shop and their roaster they’re dedicated to helping our environment.

Where to find them?

2001 SE 11th, Portland, 97214

What makes them great?

Their café has that neighborhood feel that just oozes charm. From the moment you walk in you can smell the waft of fresh roasted coffee as it seeps up from the cellar. All of their coffee is hand roasted in small batches ensuring the finest quality. From drip to espresso, there isn’t anything they can’t do.

Heart Coffee

Heart Coffee is a new comer to the coffee scene but has made a grand entrance. Small hand crafted artisan coffee that truly warms the heart. Highly skilled baristas and great pastries to boot this place is surely a repeat visit.

Where to find them?

2211 E Burnside, Portland, 97214

What makes them great?

You mean besides the expertly pulled shots or the fantastic home baked goods? The moment you walk into Heart you know you’re in for a treat. With a state of the art roaster located right in the heart of the café and a beautiful espresso machine to match, the ambience can’t be topped. This place is hip- Trendy hip.

Ristretto Roasters

Ristretto Roasters has been around for a little more than a half a decade. Time has really favored them as they have perfect their craft. Artisan crafted coffee that is hand roasted in small batches. As fine a coffee as I have ever tasted.

Where to find them?

3520 Northeast 42nd Ave, Portland, 97213

3808 N Williams Ave, Portland, 97227

What makes them great?

Have you ever bought a bag of whole bean coffee that is still warm from the roasting process? You can at Ristretto.

Blue Kangaroo Coffee Roasters

Considered an Old World craftsmanship coffee Blue Kangaroo stands out with their roasting process. Using no formulas or automated recipe cards they simply roast by sight, sound, and smell. Their process starts with the search for the finest green coffee beans and then roasting those to make the finest black coffee you can drink.

Where to find them?

7901 SE 13th Ave, Portland, OR.

What makes them great?

All of their roasting is done to order. If you want a guaranteed fresh roasted coffee, you simply can’t pass them by. Stop in and order a bag of coffee, I bet it’ll still be warm.

All of the aforementioned coffee shops are local to Portland, Oregon. Put down the Starbucks and see what else Portland has to offer.

Portland is Oregon’s largest city and has quite an eclectic population of individuals. The people who live in Portland love their city and they encourage tourists to visit-but not stay. The love of Portland is not limited to local citizens. The New York Times regularly runs articles that praise Portland and its progressive track toward, well, just about everything! Consider the following:

Portland’s public transportation system is considered one of the best on the West Coast

Portland library system is the second best in the entire United States

Portland was voted the Greenest City in the country in 2007

Portland is truly a city that is dedicated to making life easy and fun for the people who live there. The city itself is kept clean and the city motto is “Keep Portland Weird.” If you are planning a trip to Portland, here are a few of the places you must visit:

1. Powell’s Books. The flagship store is located on the corner of 10th Ave and Burnside. This company is completely independent and though it is possible to shop at Powell’s on the internet, the only physical locations for Powell’s are in the Portland metro area. The store features both new and used books-which can be found side by side on the shelves. This is not a store that has given in to corporate merchandising. On the contrary, Powell’s started out as a tiny independent bookstore a few decades ago and it’s commitment to independence has helped it grow into one of the shining jewels of Portland! If you want to read it, you will find it on Powell’s shelves.

2. Voodoo Doughnuts. This tiny doughnut shop can easily be passed by. It is located literally through a hole in the wall on 3rd and Burnside. The owners of this twenty four hour jewel of Portland started their shop to feed the people stumbling out of the many bars that surround it. Originally open only at night, the owners now keep their doors open twenty four hours and have recently opened a second location in South East Portland. The variety of doughnuts is huge and varied-do you want bacon on your maple bar? You can get it here-along with vegan doughnuts and doughnuts covered in Fruit Loops!

3. Hot Lips Pizza. Hot Lips Pizza is in the process of opening up a fifth location right next to PGE Park. This independent and locally owned pizza company is famous for its Pepperoni pizza. People will drive in from hours away just to have a slice of Pepperoni and a breadstick. All ingredients are bough and grown locally and the pizza is made right there in front of you! This is not reheated pizza-it is all fresh, all day!

There are so many great places to eat and visit in Portland it was hard to narrow down the options to just three! Visit Portland to learn more about all of the greatness that is contained within this Northwestern city’s limits.

FInding a Safe Dating Site
by: Leif Croonquist

Seems like everywhere we surf on the Internet nowadays we run across this little advertisement: ‘Free online personals’. They are everywhere, they are dating sites, and more are opening up shop every day.

Welcome to the newest internet gold rush. More and more people are signing up to these new and “free” dating sites. What they are really getting is a place on the web where they can post their profile and let strangers contact them. As more and more dating sites pile up on the web, more people are ending up with very distasteful experiences because of this. Why? 99% of today’s (and tomorrow’s) dating sites do not screen their members at all. This means there are sex offenders, predators, scam artists mixed in with genuine people who are looking to find a match. Dating services need to be very discretionary and much safer, until that time comes here are some important things to consider when thinking about joining a dating site.

1). Examine the site’s physical properties. Is it poorly constructed with missing graphics or jagged fonts, mis-aligned sections? If so, this indicates a lack of attention to detail in the construction and layout of the site. It may have been pre purchased and the owner does not have the skill to alter it correctly. Why would you care? Well, a site in a state like this gives a clue that the back end program probably is also in a state of disarray or disregard. If the webmaster cannot construct the face of the site, then it is likely they cannot also construct important safety features behind the site. A hacker then could easily penetrate it and get your personal information including your photo. If you eventually pay this site, your credit information could be stolen as well! A nicely designed site means careful construction and a better chance of good quality code running the site in the background.

2). Look at some sample profiles on the site before you sign up by running a quick search. Do the profiles look a little bogus? A lot of them are. Many sites (especially new ones that have just started up) pad their membership database with photos of models or random (usually good-looking people) to attract new members. Do the profiles have a lot of jibberish characters or nonsensical phrases in the descriptions? That means the dating site you are at does NOT screen the people who sign up. This welcomes people with ill-intent. You should get out of there immediately and go to one that does.

3). Does the site have a privacy link? Look at the bottom of the site’s main page. If they have a privacy link, click it and examine. Make sure they specifically state that they do NOT sell your information to anyone. This is an invitation to a spam and junk-mail nightmare. Also look for some sort of a web site rules page or a terms of use page. Check to see if they screen their profiles or somehow disallow racial, hate or overly sexual material. If they don’t state this than, anything goes for this site, another reason to leave.

4). Does the site have a links page? If so click and examine. See who they are affiliated with. Usually, there will be graphical banners or icons next to the names of their associations. Are they sex-sites? Spam sites? Even a quick glance in this area could tell you what kind of a dating site you are at.

5). What is the copyright date at the bottom? This could indicate the age of the site. If it is very young, this could help you determine if the site has worked out all the kinks (program bugs) and how many members they have accumulated.

6). Be wary of statements like “You are the 4697th member to join today.” and “Search through millions of profiles.” these statements are usually false. Major sites, which have been running for YEARS usually can support these statements. look for a “whos online” link. If you are the only person (1 guest online means JUST you are there) then you know these claims are false. A site with millions or even thousands of members will always have a bunch of people currently online. If you detect this in a dating site, it is better to leave than to take a chance with a dishonest site.

This is just a short list of ideas to help keep you safe when dating online. Be leary, be safe. More information can be found at www.cupidsblackbook.com.

by: Tom Frost

Although the idea of magnetic therapy has been around for centuries, the use of magnetic bracelets to ease pain is a hot topic in medical news today.

According to the December 2004 issue of the British Medical Journal, one study concluded that wearing magnetic bracelets can significantly reduce the pain of arthritis. With Celebrex and Vioxx recently called into question as treatments for arthritis, the study is good news to the over 70 million Americans suffering from the disease.

Arthritis affects one in three adults in the United States, and over half of those feel that there is nothing that can be done to ease their pain. Many of those who used to take Vioxx or Celebrex are currently choosing to suffer in silence, confused about the best medication to take.

This is a crying shame. There are a number of alternative pain management techniques– including massage, acupuncture, ice/heat treatments, mindfulness training, and magnetic therapy—and now is a perfect time to test them.

In the study published in the British Medical Journal, researchers acknowledged the need for more research regarding the placebo effect. We know that believing in any particular remedy is more likely to create a positive subjective report of improvement. It’s also true that taking any kind of action to alleviate pain results in some sense of ease.

Does the placebo effect play a role in magnetic therapy? Of course it does—just as it plays a role in the effectiveness of medication. Does this mean the therapy isn’t useful? No. If it works, it works—and isn’t that what you really care about?

If you’re considering wearing magnetic bracelets to test the idea of magnetic therapy, here are five points to keep in mind:

Trying something is better than trying nothing.

Trying something inexpensive is better than investing in a costly remedy that may not work for you.

Trying something natural and noninvasive is preferable to beginning a new medication.

It is easier to tell if a natural therapy is helping if you are not taking any pain medication that might interfere with the results.

Trying something and finding that it works for you is extremely valuable even if you are unable to find documentation to support your results.

If you’re suffering from the pain of arthritis, you might as well test magnetic therapy. It can’t hurt, and it might really help.

And that’s what matters.

New changes by the City of Portland just put an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) within reach of most homeowners. On March 3, 2010, Portland City Council waived the System Development Charges for ADUs for 3 years, subtracting up to $15,000 from the cost of developing an ADU. Council also voted to increase the size limits to 800 SF or 75% of the primary structure. These policy changes have opened a key window of opportunity for the creation of ADUs in Portland that local home builders say brings the promise of a new spurt of “smart growth” just when the city’s economy needs it the most.

ADUs, also called “granny flats” or “backyard cottages”, are separate, compact spaces – complete with bed, bath, kitchen, and entry – that provide a second dwelling on residential property.

History of ADU Policy in Portland

Before World War II, Accessory Dwelling Units were a common fixture of American neighborhoods. They integrated easily into existing communities, provided affordable housing options for young and old, and facilitated intergenerational living for families.

But after WWII, national patterns of urban development shifted toward low-density sprawl and new zoning rules emerged that segregated land uses and housing types. During this period, ADUs fell out of favor and, in fact, were outlawed in most urban areas across the country.

After several decades of sprawl – accompanied by urban blight, car dependence, and loss of greenspace – communities across the country began advocating for smarter growth. The City of Portland became an early leader in this movement, and was among the first to reallow ADU development. But it was not until 1998 that the City began promoting ADUs by relaxing minimum area requirements; eliminating owner-occupancy requirements; and permitting ADUs in most residential zones.

Despite this progress, onerous maximum SF requirements and systems development charges (SDCs) of up to $15,000 remained. With an average ADU building cost of $75,000, these SDCs and square footage restrictions caused most consumers to either abandon ADU projects entirely or alter projects to avoid ADU designation and permitting.

So, the many “smart growth” benefits of ADU development – each firmly aligned with the City’s Portland Plan – have largely remained unrealized. These missed opportunities include:

Increasing the supply of affordable housing in a way that blends easily with existing neighborhoods;

Supporting the creation of a compact urban form that supports walking, transit, and vibrant neighborhoods;

Providing an independent living option for elderly/disabled that promotes intergenerational living;

Generating extra rental income for owners and tax base for the City;

Providing increased residential development without major new infrastructure.

Key Roadblocks Removed

In 2008 the City began a review of its zoning codes and regulations governing sustainable building technologies and forms. The effort, called RICAP5 (Regulatory Improvement Code Amendment Package 5), was guided by a Citizens Advisory Committee of key stakeholders that recommended removing the regulatory roadblocks to ADU development.

The committee’s work met considerable success. On March 3, 2010 Portland City Council removed all SDCs for ADUs. Council followed soon after by increasing maximum size restrictions to 800 SF or 75% of the primary structure, whichever is less. In Mayor Sam Adams’ words: “This couldn’t happen at a better time, given the significant hardships faced by builders and the construction industry, and in terms of our goals for sustainability in the community.”

The last boom in ADUs was during the Great Depression. Now, according to local builders and policymakers, ADU development might help homeowners and the local economy emerge from the Great Recession. But the window of opportunity is not open forever; the City’s easing of ADU development regulations ends on June 30, 2013.

Potential Benefits of ADU Projects to Homeowners and the Community

ADUs promise to benefit homeowners and the community as:

Local and sustainable drivers of neighborhood prosperity and vitality;

Dwellings that significantly improve value and marketability of properties;

Inexpensive projects with high built-value and return on investment (ROI);

“Plug-And-Play”, easy developments.

Many in the home building and real estate community see ADU development as a boon for Porltand’s future. “It’s the people that make Portland interesting – young entrepreneurs who bring business to the city and life to the sidewalks,” says local broker Kama Dersham. “ADUs are hip and affordable for these folks and will help keep Portland vibrant and viable.”

Bicycle Commuting Primary

Bicycle Commute in a Smart and Sustainable Manner

Many options exist for those who commute to do so in a ‘Smart’ manner by reducing your carbon footprint, saving money and treating your body well.

Let me start by outlining some of the benefits you’ll realize by riding your bike to work once a week, twice a week or every day. First, you will feel clear headed and energized by getting some fresh air and exercise as you start your day. The first couple weeks might be a challenge as you pin down your route, get comfortable with the pattern and begin to develop those cycling muscles. Second, you’ll know that you are part of the solution and not the problem. You will be reducing your carbon footprint and oil dependence, as well as traffic congestion. Last, you will be experiencing less stress because you won’t be in traffic or having to deal with tailgating and the mindset which accompanies driving in your car. Oh yeah, one more thing. You’ll be saving money by cutting back on your fuel consumption, car maintenance, parking and other costs for commuting the old fashion way.

What kind of bike is best for commuting? Well, fortunately we live in an era when manufacturers are creating a range of commuter friendly bikes. Typically they have a frame geometry which is more friendly to commuting by requiring less stooping over. They also emphasize safety by including fatter tires, open pedals with a gripping gate, fenders and grip shifting. Also, commuter bikes will have components which are sealed and more impervious to the elements. Keep in mind that it’s critical to have a helmet and having a mirror is a huge help and will give extra confidence when riding in traffic or making turns.

Not everyone can bicycle to work, but you might be surprised to learn that by tuning up your bike, a little trail scouting you can start riding your bike to
1000
work this week.

One first step that I highly recommend is go to your local Craigslist.org and browse the ‘bicycling’ discussion forum. Here you will learn about how people like yourself are getting to work and all of the alternatives, issues, concerns and practical ideas for making a bike commute manageable. Also, the community is usually very willing to give feedback and ideas.

Last year I rode my bike four miles to work in rainy Portland, Oregon. I made sure that I had fenders and proper lighting and reflectors. I also purchased rainproof cycling pants and full finger gloves for Winter riding. It takes a minute to put on the all weather clothing and once at work you can hang it in a closet until you ride home.

Don’t think that you can’t have your coffee and radio as you make your commute. With a thermal mug and a walkman style radio you can enjoy your morning beverage and listen to your favorite music or news program. Be sure to use headphones which are safe for cycling, typically they direct the sound forward and not directly into the ear.

I tend to ride at a slow and safe pace and found that I could do the four miles into work without breaking a sweat or feeling that my safety was jeopardized. I would ride residential streets and avoid the busier roads. I would also find bike paths that were popular with other cyclists, for the ‘safety in numbers’ approach. I was actually taking about the same amount of time to cycle to work as I would to commute through traffic and figure out parking.

It’s important to have a bright flashing rear light, to ensure that cars can see you clearly and heighten visibility in poor weather. Also, keep those tires pumped up so that your bike rides efficiently and you aren’t tiring from low tire pressure. If your bike needs a tune-up you can typically find someone on craigslist who can perform a tune-up very inexpensively and sometimes they will make house calls.

There are a few concerns that people typically express when considering bike commuting.

“My office is way too far to ride my bike to”. This may be true, but it’s worth scouting out the
possibilities before completely dismissing riding your bike. Many commuter trains and buses will accommodate bikes to make the distances more appealing.

“I will smell bad or be uncomfortable wearing clothes which I rode my bike to work in”. You can try to address this by either bringing a change of clothes or finding clothing which breathes well and is more compatible with both cycling and work. The New York Times recently featured an article on the changes in fashion to accommodate cycling to work.

“It’s not safe to ride my bike to work”. There is some truth to this argument, because you are not as safe as having a steel shell wrapped around your body. However, if we spend our lives without some risk we will never grow or evolve as people. By riding defensively and taking a route which avoids traffic you can get to work with minimal risk. The key is to be vigilant in ensuring that you ride safely and not lose touch with this important responsibility.

“What will people think if they see me on a bike?”. This is a personal issue which every individual has to reconcile. If you work in an environment or with people who are judgmental and expect conformity then cycling to work might not be for you. On the other hand, many people see cycling to work as the new thing, which shows your forward thinking, adventurous and socially responsible.

Most people who take up commuting by bike to work start out slowly and choose to do so when the weather is nice. If they stick with it, they eventually decide that it’s better to ride their bike then drive because of the way they feel afterward and how they feel they are making a difference.

My wife and I currently live in the great North West, Portland area, to be exact. It is a beautiful area for sure! When I get all tied up with the hustle and bustle of the big city life, I need to unwind. My two favorite things to do is get out camping and fishing.

I have three favorite places to do that here that are close and affordable, Promontory Park, Milo McIver Park, and now, Metzler Park. All three of these are less than an hour away. The furthest one is only 40 miles from our house!

Since we like camping and fishing,The first Favorite is Promontory and it is definitely the most convenient. I hook up our 12 foot aluminum boat behind our 23 foot motor home, it’s a 1983 Mini Winnie and head out of town. The reservoir is stocked on a regular basis so trout fishing is good. There is a nice dock there and it is easy to put the boat in. The campsites are all rustic, so the convenience of the motor home is nice, but they have hot showers and a few strategically placed electric hot plate cookers, so tent camping is real good too! The first time we went there it was in a two room cabin tent.

The second favorite spot is Metzler, it is also the furthest. The campsites are more private and the majority have water and electric hook ups. If you want to fish there don’t bother with a boat, there’s no launch site and the stream is small. What they do have there is a lot of banks to fish from and several trails to walk.

And finally the Third favorite is Milo McIver Park. They have electric and water hook ups, the campsites are spacious, and the park is well maintained. There is also a stream and trails. All of these are with in traveling distance from each other, so you could take your boat and head over to Promontory from the other two.

As far as your daily chores being better, did you ever notice how bacon, even though it’s cooked on a camp stove tastes better when your camping? Sooo Cooking is more fun! and the cleaning and so forth have to be done when you’re stuck in the city anyway so what the hey!

I hope you get the opportunity to check these out if you haven’t all ready, and remember have fun and enjoy life!

Families looking for parks and playgrounds in Portland are sure to find an abundance of fun in the Portland area. Portland is full of fun and natural beauty and the citizens and visitors take full advantage of their surroundings. While many visitors flock to the Oregon Trail Museum and Powell’s Books for fun, others enjoy being outside. Take a look at these outdoor options when in Portland, Oregon.

Tom McCall Park

Even when the weather is not so great, many people can be found congregating in Tom McCall Park in downtown Portland. This riverfront park is a fun haven for families, bikers, roller bladders and joggers. The peaceful park also hosts many of the city’s large events. The Blues Festival, the Oregon Brewers Festival and many Rose Festival events are annually held in Tom McCall Park. The name of the park came from Governor McCall after he decided to demolish Harbor Drive and build the park in the 1970s.

Forest Park In Portland

Forest Park in Portland is one of the largest parks in the world. It’s the ideal place for families to come for hiking and enjoying the great outdoors of the city. With over 5,000 acres of land, it’s a place where people can come to feel free from the city’s stressful ways. It is certainly the largest of the parks and playgrounds in Portland. Forest Park proudly holds thirty miles of biking trails and fifty miles of walking trails. Many people call it the country’s biggest playground!

Oregon Zoo

While it’s not technically a human park, the Oregon Zoo is certainly an animal park! Pharmacist Richard Knight began the zoo many years ago and it now occupies 64 acres in Washington Park. With over 1,000 animals there, the zoo is clearly a hot spot for locals and visitors to Portland. Each animal habitat in the zoo is like the animal’s natural environment and several endangered species are housed there. The zoo contains areas which mimic Africa, Alaska, the Amazon Forest and the Savannah. Bats, insects, mountain goats, elk, penguins, big cats and Asian elephants are also featured.

Thus, those families on a mission to find the best parks and playgrounds in Portland could spend weeks visiting each one. The parks in the city offer entertainment, adventure, discovery, fitness opportunities and more. While some activities to do require a fee (such as the zoo) to participate, most of the parks and playgrounds in Portland are completely free to all visitors.

Portland, OR has been bestowed with certain characteristics that make owning a home, a leisure house, or an investment property in the area highly desirable. The real estate market in this part of the United States has fared well in the current downturn. The region has also been attractive for homebuyers and investors because it features some of the most beautiful scenic landscapes in the nation, a healthy living and recreational environment, and a large number of unique qualities, including the city’s designation as the “greenest” and “cleanest” city in the nation. The following distinctive characteristics of Portland should appeal to many property buyers looking for a dream house or an investment property offering exceptional value:

Resilient real estate market. Prices in the area have declined so far by 20% from their peak; while nationwide they have fallen by 30%. At the same time, foreclosure rates in Portland have climbed to 1.8% as of September 2009, while nationwide they are 2.7%.

Lower property taxes. In terms of the real estate tax as a percentage of home value, Multnomah County, in which Portland is located, is ranked 383rd in the nation, with the ratio of 0.91%. This makes it more favorable in terms of property taxes than 49% of the counties in the United States and better than the nationwide average of 0.96%.

“Green” and “Clean.” Portland, OR has been ranked in the SustainLane’s 2006 U.S. City Ranking as the most sustainable city in the nation. The city is ranked number one in terms of energy/climate, green building, and city innovation. It was ranked second in terms of the air and tap water quality and green economy. Portland also has the inner-city free public transportation, which contributes to the area’s image of the “green” and “clean” community.

Natural beauties and scenic landscapes. Portland boasts some 37,000 acres of land covered by the scenic greenery and 150 miles of bike trails and lanes. It is home to the largest urban park in the nation. The area is decorated by the rugged splendor of the Cascades, the rolling hills of Oregon’s wine country, and the breathtaking Oregon Coast. Therefore, this place offers a myriad of indoor and outdoor recreational activities and attractions, fairs and festivals, and community-driven activities.

Well educated and young population. On average, residents of Portland are better-educated than the average community in the United States. Nearly a third of all citizens in the area have higher education.

A cultural hotspot. Contradicting the stereotypes, Portland, OR is also a city of artists. The city has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. In support of the city’s artistic appeal is the fact that Portland Art Museum is the oldest museum on the West Coast.

A tourist hotspot. Many travel and food magazines have been writing about Portland as one of the new hip places to visit.

Safe living environment. This year, the violent crime rate in Oregon has dropped to the lowest since the early 1970′s. In terms of property crime, the State’s property crime rate is at its lowest level since 1966.

All these characteristics showcase Portland as one of the most desirable locations to live and own a piece of real property. Given the new trend in home buying and property investing that promotes a combination of safe and pleasurable living with a prospect of housing equity appreciation, Portland should appear as the natural choice for many homebuyers and investors.

Phil Anderson, the owner of New Portland Home, Portland’s largest RMLS site. he specializes in listing and selling single family homes, condominiums and multi-family properties (1031 and 1033 Tax Exchange Specialist) in Portland metro.

Taking A Paddleboat Cruise
by: Mary Hanna

In May my husband and I took a wonderful steamboat trip on the Colombia River, 1,240 miles long, and Snake River, 1,038 miles long, aboard the American West’s Empress of the North. This is the first time we had ever done a “niche” type cruise and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Yes, the clientele tends to be older, but, what a shame that the younger mature adults are missing out on all this fun. It is steam boating in the true sense of the word. The paddlewheel turns as you leisurely make your way up and down the rivers and through the many dams that have been erected since the time of Lewis and Clarke. The ship is patterned after the river boats that plied the waters of Alaska, Oregon and Washington over 100 years ago and has a distinctly Russian flavor.

On the particular adventure that we took it was to follow the path of the Lewis and Clarke expedition so it was historical as well as fun. We boarded the Empress of the North in Portland, Oregon with no mishaps just a bit of a long wait. However, they did supply entertainment and refreshments while they prepared the ship for us. Once aboard we were escorted to a lovely stateroom that was right out of the riverboat era. It was roomy, beautifully decorated and had a balcony with two chairs and a table. There was a TV but we never used it since the real entertainment was the trip and the excursions which were included in the price of the cruise. The rooms reminded you of the river boat era but were very much up to modern standards.

Just a little tidbit: The “Portland Penny” is how Portland got its name narrowly missing being called Boston. The partners Lovejoy and Pettygrove who had filed the claim staking the territory needed to come up with a name for the quickly expanding territory. Lovejoy being from Boston, Massachusetts was adamant that this would be the name, while Pettygrove equally adamant wanted it to be called Portland after his beloved Portland, Maine. Hence the “Portland Penny” when Pettygrove won two out of the three tosses.

The artwork on the Empress was truly impressive. There were beautiful Russian artifacts and amazing pictures of the gold rush and life in the Northwest during the 1800’s. I spent a lot of time just going up and down the four hallways perusing the artwork. (Every floor has a different theme).

Our first night out of Portland we were invited to cocktails and hors d’oeurves at the Paddlewheel lounge which is in the back of the boat and has windows overlooking the paddle wheel. We were still busy getting situated so we grabbed a cocktail and took it back to our room to get organized. Dinner was in the Romanov Dining room and the atmosphere really was one of a riverboat. The food was very good served by a courteous and fun American crew. Dinner lasted about an hour to an hour and a half and then it was off to the Golden Nugget showroom to watch the Pat O’Neal and the River Boat Jazz band play great Dixieland Music. Well, if you weren’t into it by then you never were going to be. What fun and you are sharing it with only 200 other passengers. After the show you could stay in the Showroom for dancing or go to the Paddlewheel Lounge for the duo of Kari & Jerry who were not only very good but extremely friendly.

Of course, you are in a new place everyday and everyday brings a new exciting, educational and different excursion. Our first day out we where cruising the Columbia River Gorge taking in the breathtaking vistas, granite cliffs and waterfalls from which the Cascade Mountains takes it’s name.

We thoroughly enjoyed this trip and would recommend to other adults, this not a ship for children.

Is P2p Legal?

P2P (peer-to-peer) is a type of file-sharing network that allows individuals across the globe to trade files, or torrents, directly with one another without going through a third-party server. Computers on a file-sharing network link up using peer-to-peer software. A few examples of files shared over P2P include freeware, shareware, betas, and original works of all kinds from music to photography, programs and scripts. It is illegal, however, to share copyrighted materials without permission.

Copyrighted materials include software that is being shared in a way that is inconsistent with its End User License Agreement (EULA), commercial music and movies. These products are often shared despite laws that protect the works by prohibiting unauthorized distribution. Even a user who only intends to download materials becomes a distributor because of the way P2P works. As a torrent is being received, the parts already present on the hard drive are automatically uploaded to others requesting the file.

Music illegally shared over P2P has been a central focus for lawsuits. This isn’t a surprise since the first peer-to-peer network was dedicated to sharing music torrents. To stop the hemorrhaging of protected music over file-sharing networks, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has sued some 40,000 individuals.

Fortunately for the RIAA, the architecture of peer-to-peer networks makes it fairly simple to collect required proof, as the Internet Protocol (IP) address that identifies a user’s computer on the Internet is displayed inside the P2P software when participating in file-sharing. If the RIAA or a third-party watchdog clicks on a commercial music torrent, the IP addresses of everyone sharing that file is displayed.

Despite illegal sharing, RIAA tactics have come under fire, most notably after unsuccessfully att
1000
empting to sue a forty-something disabled, single mother. Tanya Andersen of Portland, Oregon was wrongfully targeted for sharing gangsta rap music, then allegedly pressured for two years to settle out of court, even after the RIAA discovered an error in their methodology that pointed to a different individual as the culprit. The RIAA finally dropped the suit, but not before Andersen filed her own suit against the RIAA, accusing them of a campaign of harassment and intimidation.

The vast majority of RIAA lawsuits for P2P copyright infringement are settled out of court for $4,000-$5,000 US Dollars (USD) each. It’s speculated that the RIAA’s methods have resulted in more than just one wrongful lawsuit, but most P2P users don’t have the means to hire a lawyer, and those who have gone to court and lost have been awarded outrageous sums by juries. Jammie Thomas was found guilty amid overwhelming evidence and ordered to pay $80,000 per song, for a total judgment of $1.92 million USD.

The RIAA’s public reputation has taken a beating for what is often characterized as an overly aggressive reaction to the problem. In December 2008 the RIAA announced it would no longer target individuals, working with Internet Service Providers (ISP) to warn offenders instead. New lawsuits have continued to be filed, however, and the RIAA isn’t the only one monitoring P2P networks. The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) is also targeting file-sharers that break copyright laws.

Andersen’s harrowing ordeal along with mind-boggling jury awards have made some people steer clear of P2P all together. Even the hundreds of thousands of users that go to P2P for legal torrents face a perceived increased risk of malicious attack from simply advertising their IP addresses across a global network for anyone to target, or perhaps wrongfully record. As a result, many have turned to downloading binaries instead, a process that does not require uploading or sharing, and more resembles traditional downloading.
